Candidate Profile

Matt Vitale

MO-HD-96

Matt Vitale

Matt Vitale is a South St. Louis County native, public servant, husband, and father of two running to represent Missouri House District 96.

Born and raised in the community he now hopes to represent, Matt has built his career around helping people and making public institutions work for the families who depend on them. He began his career with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, helping veterans with vision loss develop the skills and learn the technology they needed to live independently. He later built a career in digital accessibility and civil-rights enforcement, serving as Lead Accessibility Specialist for the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and training attorneys across the country to investigate accessibility complaints in schools and universities.

Matt and his wife, Becca, have been married for ten years and are raising two children. They chose to make their home in HD-96 in part because of the strength of the Lindbergh Schools. That experience has made protecting Missouri’s public schools particularly personal for Matt.

He is running to make sure those schools remain fully funded and accountable to the communities they serve. Matt opposes efforts to divert resources toward private-school vouchers, charter-school expansion, and policies that weaken neighborhood public schools. He also wants to protect the specialized services that children with disabilities and other vulnerable students rely upon.

But Matt’s campaign is also rooted in something familiar to families throughout suburban St. Louis: it has become too expensive to raise a family.

As parents themselves, Matt and Becca understand the pressure created by rising housing, childcare, healthcare, utility, and everyday household costs. Matt wants Missouri to make it easier—not harder—for working families to build a life here, while resisting tax policies that favor wealthy corporations and leave local communities carrying more of the burden.

Matt is also running as a strong ally of working people. He supports paid sick leave, collective bargaining and organizing rights, fair wages, and union-led apprenticeship and skills programs that give Missourians a path to good careers without requiring enormous college debt.

And he will defend the rights Missouri voters themselves have protected at the ballot box, including reproductive freedom and fair representation.

HD-96 presents Democrats with a real opportunity. The district voted Democratic at the presidential level in 2024 even while returning a Republican to the Missouri House. Matt’s background in public service, deep roots in South County, commitment to public education, and focus on the economic concerns facing families give Democrats a strong candidate to close that gap.

Matt Vitale is running to bring responsive, community-focused representation back to HD-96—and help break the Republican supermajority in Jefferson City.

We showed up to reject the radical agenda of the Republican supermajority. Missourians won't give up their power to right-wing billionaires, don't trust the ruling party in Jefferson City, and won't water down their own constitutional rights. Now let's flip this seat and break the supermajority.
