Mitchell Berman is a registered nurse, union member, longtime VA caregiver, and working-class Wisconsinite running to represent Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District.
Mitchell grew up in a one-stoplight town in rural Wisconsin in a family where hard work was simply part of life. His father built a small roofing business, while his mother worked long hours in a local foundry. Mitchell began working young, earned his nursing assistant license as a teenager, and became the first person in his family to graduate from college, working three jobs and taking on student loans to make it possible.
For more than 23 years, Mitchell has worked in healthcare. He spent over a decade caring for veterans, active-duty servicemembers, and their families at the VA, and he continues to work as a board-certified emergency nurse.
His career has given him a firsthand view of the pressures working families face: patients rationing medication, families struggling with medical bills, seniors worried about losing benefits, and healthcare workers trying to do more with fewer resources.
Mitchell is also a longtime union member. He got his first union job with Teamsters Local 344 while in college and has remained a union member at organized workplaces throughout his career, including with the Wisconsin Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals and National Nurses United.
He’s running for Congress to:
- lower the cost of housing, healthcare, childcare, groceries, and energy
- protect Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security
- lower prescription-drug costs and expand access to affordable healthcare
- keep manufacturing jobs in Wisconsin and strengthen unions and apprenticeships
- protect rural hospitals, maternity care, family farms, and rural communities
- defend reproductive freedom
- invest in public education and vocational training
- support veterans and strengthen VA healthcare
- ban congressional stock trading and reduce the influence of corporate money in politics
- protect Wisconsin’s clean water, public lands, and communities from corporate pollution
Mitchell’s campaign is rooted in the idea that working people deserve representatives who understand their lives because they’ve lived them.
In one of the country’s most competitive congressional districts, he’s running to bring the perspective of a nurse, union worker, veteran caregiver, and working-class Wisconsin family to Washington.
Washington is broken. Too often, politicians make big promises in Wisconsin, then they go to Washington and only look out for themselves. I've been taking care of Wisconsin my entire working life. I'm running for Congress to fight for Wisconsin families, not billionaires and big corporations.
